Best Wedding Photography of 2020 – the interlude

You don’t need me to reflect on what happened last year, we all know what happened, but before I start this post, I hope that wherever you are reading this, you’re ok, your family are good and you’re staying strong and positive. Let’s hope that the recent news of a vaccine rollout is the beginning of the end to this chapter, and that we can all return to weddings and celebrations soon, because I for one, miss them like crazy!!!

So, I’ll be honest, I contemplated whether this post was even worth doing, after all I was only actively working as a photographer for 25 hours last year, the fact I can physically count that it was 25 hours illustrates just how bad a year it was for our industry. Therefore, collating a “best of” wedding photography post didn’t feel quite right at first, but on reflection, I still had the joy and pleasure of hanging out with 6 couples, some of their friends and close family to celebrate their love and marriage to each other, even if the celebrations afterwards were a little more reserved than usual. It will take a lot more than a bad year for the buzz and adrenaline this profession provides to burn out, I can assure you of that.

If this year did show me anything, or it showed those few couples that did manage to make their wedding happen, it’s that you can still have an incredible day/celebration with limited numbers. I do hope and feel as though this pandemic will make couples realise they don’t need 200+ guests to their wedding in order to celebrate, obviously there’s nothing wrong should you decide to do that, I’m not here to judge, I just hope that if anything is to come from this, it makes couples really question what’s important.

On a brighter note, a year of free weekends for me and much more time at home has certainly helped re-charge the batteries, I’ve been able to spend a full summer at home with the kids and we’ve done things we’d never have been able to do had I been working. There’s no doubt that the experience of last year will continue to influence my workload going forward, I’ve always strived to keep the volume of weddings I shoot to a manageable amount, and even with postponements going into 2021, I’ve made the call to keep a weekend free every month, regardless of what offers might come in!! I’ve also had much more time to explore the education aspect of my work, something that has organically grown over the past few years, but with much more time and headspace available in 2020, I was able to advance much more, and that continues now as I build my first online teaching course for new photographers and wedding photographers alike. More on that to follow in late Feb and early March!!

So that’s it from me, a slightly different “Best of” post for sure, but a “Best of” post nonetheless……
